Food costs rising for families

This is from Public Health:

According to this years’ Ontario Nutritious Food Basket survey, completed in June 2008, the weekly cost of the food basket for a family of four (2 parents and 2 children) in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph was $149.09. This represents an 11.5% increase from 2007, the highest increase since 1998.

Of note, this costing includes only basic foods from the Canada’s Food Guide. It does not include processed and prepared foods (such as TV dinners), snack foods with low nutritional value (such as soft drinks and chips), restaurant or take-out foods. It also excludes foods for special diets, cultural preferences, vitamin and mineral supplements and non-food items such as toiletries, paper products, detergents and cleaning supplies. The survey assumes that consumers have the time, knowledge, ability and equipment to plan meals, purchase and store ingredients and prepare meals from low-cost staples.
