Is Council’s role in fulfilling its governance responsibilities one of a “team player” or “watch dog”?
I feel it is both and our approach to each must be well balanced if we are to successfully enhance Council’s governance role at City Hall (and that has been a theme of this term of Council).
When it comes to setting the strategic direction of the organization, we need to work collaboratively with our Senior Management Team. When it comes to building an organizational culture that is aligned with our values of integrity, excellence and wellness, we need real teamwork throughout the organization starting at the top.
And when it comes to ensuring we deliver on the strategic goals for our community and ensure accountability for taxpayers, our role is one of stewardship or a “watch dog”.
