I just attended a meeting with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Nicola Mercer, who provided an update on the swine flu situation.
There have been no reported cases of this flu in Guelph yet. Dr. Mercer advised that the symptoms and transmission of swine flu at this time are no different than the regular seasonal flu that we see every year. The same common-sense ways to avoid getting sick apply:
- Clean your hands frequently with alcohol-based hand sanitizer (in public places this can be more practical than washing with soap and water, since you can re-contaminate your hands on taps or door knobs)
- If you are sick, stay home. If your children are sick, keep them home from school or day care.
- Sneeze or cough into the bend of your elbow or into a tissue.
