Just a week ago, it was announced that Guelph will build $66.5 million dollars in new infrastructure, with the help of $44.4 million in funding from the federal and provincial governments.
This is a significant amount – more than many other communities our size.
The projects include road reconstruction as well as upgrades to facilities such as the River Run Centre and the main Fire Station.
What does this mean for our community, particularly those who find themselves without employment during these difficult economic times?
Well, I can assure you, if we are going to put $66.5 million worth of infrastructure in the ground over the next two years, we’re going to need some help!
There will be jobs in the construction business, in road work and paving, and consulting and project management. Suppliers of materials like concrete and pipes will need help to meet the spike in demand. There will also be opportunities in administration and financial reporting.
We’ve had early discussions with the Chamber and other local agencies to talk about how to promote and fill these positions. Once we know more, information will be posted on our web site, guelph.ca. Of course, you can always find postings for City jobs on guelph.ca as well.
This money did not just land in our lap. It is the result of Council approving its capital project priorities early. We positioned ourselves to be ready to respond to the anticipated funding program. It is also the result of the astounding work that City staff did in two weeks to submit dozens of proposals for consideration. Our success in this round of infrastructure funding is an outcome of a strong working relationship between Council and staff.
Good governance and strong management makes an effective team.
