Court security being uploaded

One of the downloaded services that really annoyed some municipalities was court security. If you were “fortunate” enough to have a Provincial Court in your municipality, your police service had to provide security.

After 8 years of lobbying by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the Ontario Association of Police Service Boards, the Provincial Government if finally going to take back the responsibility and costs associated with transporting and guarding prisoners.

Not all municipalities have a Provincial Court within their boundaries.  The residents and businesses in municipalities that do have a courthouse have been subsidizing the system for other users.  For Guelph, it means about $1.3 M per year.  Unfortunately, the uploading won’t begin until 2012 and will be phased in over 6 years.  Despite the length of time, it is good to see that the current funding arrangement will be corrected.
