Guelph Man Swims Across Lake Ontario

June 1, 2010

On August 10th, Guelph Marlins swim coach and Toronto Star graphic designer, Miguel Vadillo, will attempt to swim across Lake Ontario.

The 52 chilly and choppy kilometres from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Marilyn Bell Park will test his endurance and strength.

Inspired by a lifelong love of swimming, he is raising money to support Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart charity that provides swimming lessons to children who can’t afford them. Miguel expects to fund the anticipated $6,000 needed to cover the costs himself and through friends, family and corporate sponsors.

Born in Mexico City, this athlete’s life has been devoted to swimming. H e won a bronze medal at the world junior modern pentathlon cup that is a five event Olympic sport that includes: fencing, horseback riding, pistol shooting, cross-country running and a 200-metre swim. Although he never made it to the Olympics, he found his niche coaching Canada’s pentathlon team right here in Guelph.

We wish him luck on August 10th!!
