The City of Guelph has owned the Guelph Junction Railway tracks and right of way for many years. Rail service to local manufacturers was provided by CP.
When CP pulled out of Guelph, leaving local manufacturers high and dry, the City stepped in to ensure rail service continued for local manufacturers. Guelph Junction Railway entered into an agreement with a short-line operator who has been providing excellent rail service for several years.
Guelph Junction Railway generates sufficient revenue through the operation of the business to cover operational expenses and maintain and/or replace capital infrastructure. What that means is the service is paid for by the businesses that use it and taxpayers’ dollars are NOT used to provide this service.
