Getting down to basics

I have just finished a series of eight posts on a number of ways that Members of Council are held accountable for their actions as elected representatives – through legislation, policies and procedures.

Sometimes it is better to keep it simple.

Here are the “Ten Ways to be an Effective Mayor” from the Grade Five students at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic School.  They presented this to me when I went to speak to them about the role of municipal government and the Mayor.

  1. Be a good role model
  2. Keep your promises
  3. Help take care of our environment
  4. Follow the Golden Rule – treat others the way you would like to be treated
  5. Listen to the people in your city
  6. Visit schools often and talk to students about things that affect them
  7. Spend money wisely on what the city needs
  8. Try to be involved in the community by making appearances at special events
  9. Stay true to yourself and the city
  10. Have fun every day
