The topic of community gardens has generated a fair bit of interest on this blog.
We had four pilot gardens last year.
Two of the gardens are on City Property, the first in Peter Misersky Park and the second straddling Norm Jary Park and the Shelldale Centre/Kindle property. Two of the gardens are on Upper Grand District School Board property at Brant Ave School and an empty lot on Stephanie Drive.
They were a great success.
This spring the UGDSB is supporting two new garden sites and a community group approached City staff regarding a proposed site at 14 Edinburgh Rd South (the corner of Edinburgh and Preston). Both the community group and the site met the specifications of the City staff team and a community consultation survey was circulated. The response was very positive and staff will work to mitigate any of the concerns that were raised by neighbours through the consulation. The garden is under the pilot program so if any issues do develop the garden can be discontinued and removed. With good care this will hopefully not be the case.
