For the fourth year in a row, Guelph has Canada’s lowest crime severity index, reports Statistics Canada. The index measures the volume and severity of crime divided by the population.
Here are some highlights:
- Guelph’s crime severity level is 50.4, compared with a national average of 82.7
- Guelph had 4,241 crimes last year, 14% lower than in 2009. Crime fell across the board, including robberies, burglaries, and motor vehicle thefts.
- Guelph’s violent crime index is 44.5, about half the national rate of 88.9.
Many factors go into making Guelph the safest city in Canada, including the excellent work of the Guelph Police Service and our strong, well-connected neighbourhoods. Every resident of Guelph should take tremendous pride in being part of the nation’s safest city.
