Delivering on “doing business differently”

Our CAO and Executive Team presented the framework and 2012 strategic activities (priorities) for the Corporate Strategic Plan to the Governance Committee yesterday.

In doing so, they have challenged the organization – including Council – to walk the talk. We should expect nothing less from our CAO and senior management.

It feels uncomfortable and it should.  We asked for a game changer and that means having to let go of some things to bring greater value to the community we serve.  This is never easy.

There are three areas of focus.  Significantly, they respond to the fundamental relationships between Council, City Hall and the community ( a theme I have been blogging about recently).

  • Innovation in Local Government responds to the expectation of residential and business taxpayers to receive value for every tax dollar they provide to City Hall to pay for municipal services.
  • Organizational Excellence responds to the expectation of Council for exceptional performance from City staff in managing the organization.
  • City Building responds to the expectation of the community for Council to demonstrate leadership that contributes to the quality of life in our community – a healthy environment, vibrant local economy, flourishing cultural life and a compassionate, caring community.

You can’t turn a large ship on a dime but you can set a new course and begin to steer in a different direction.
