World Mental Health Day

Making a Difference

I hosted the 13th annual Mayor’s Initiative for World Mental Health Day today.

The topic this year was suicide – a challenging but important topic to discuss.

Allan Strong from the Shelf Help Alliance and Laura McCormack from the Canadian Mental Health Association presented two new videos and spoke to their work.

Every year, an average of 3,750 Canadian commit suicide and it is the second leading cause of death among those aged 15 to 34.  Gordon Tosh from the County of Wellington noted self harm is the second highest cause of injury in the County of Wellington.

The programs presented today offer a safe non-judgemental space to talk about suicide.  Their focus on peer to peer support is making a difference.
