Council endorsed the community-developed Community Energy Plan in 2007. Since that time we have partnered with local organizations and businesses to forge a new energy future for Guelph.
Combining conservation, efficiency, local generation (both heat and power), renewable energy and smart grids, the initiative will build a more reliable, secure, sustainable and affordable energy future for our residents and businesses.
Since that time we have been relentless – with federal, provincial and municipal governments, many Ministers of Energy and energy sector associations – to promote our vision for Guelph and that of other leading communities who are embracing the opportunities that integrated community energy systems offer for their residents and businesses.
I believe we are starting to see that work pay off.
Just a few weeks ago, the Ministry of Energy directed the Ontario Power Authority to consult with municipalities on regional energy plans. Guelph will be host to one of these consultations next week.
In addition, the Minister has indicated a commitment to a stronger voice for municipalities in renewable energy development as well as support for municipal energy plans such as our Community Energy Initiative (CEI).
All of this bodes extremely well for accelerating the ongoing implementation of the CEI.
Guelph Hydro Inc. has recently produced an excellent brochure – Partnering with The City of Guelph to create a sustainable energy future – that summarizes our work together for Guelph residents and businesses.
If you wish to join your voice in support of the Community Energy Initiative at the local Ontario Power Authority Consultation, the evening of June 27, please contact Rob Kerr, Corporate Manager of Community Energy (email@example.com)
You can read more information on the CEI here.
