Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference August 18-21, Ottawa

I will be leading a delegation of heads of Council or their representatives for Brant, Brantford, Cambridge, Kitchener, Region of Waterloo, Waterloo and Wellington County at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario next week. High on the agenda is the discussion about the fast-tracking of an integrated regional transportation initiative and its funding with  Glen Murray, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Preliminary work on the regional transportation initiative began in 2010 when the Ministry of Transportation, Guelph and nearby municipalities agreed to undertake a Strategic Regional Transportation Planning Initiative to address regional needs of all modes of public transportation.

The City of Guelph will also meet with Bob Chiarelli on community energy issues.  I will be joined by the City’s Chief Administrative Officer, Ann Pappert, senior City officials and local business leaders. Our interest is to follow up with the Minister on how Municipalities can play a stronger role in regional energy planning and implementation. We will also follow up on the status of our local energy generation projects before the Ontario Power Authority.

In addition, I will also discuss Guelph’s strategy to create an open government action plan with Linda Jeffrey, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

I am confident that we will have excellent discussions with our Provincial ministers. I will keep you updated.
