Two important things happened last night.

  • Council approved the plan for the Guelph Innovation District – an exciting vision for these lands
  • A planner and an economic development officer jointly presented the vision to Council

Why is the approval of the plan important?

Getting the planning work completed for the Guelph Innovation District paves the way to attract the investment needed to redevelop these lands.  We have seen this in the downtown. And, as we have learned from our successful experience in the downtown, in the new economy, where competition between cities for investment is fierce, we can’t just put up a “for sale” sign and hope for the best.  If we are going to achieve the vision and opportunity of the Guelph Innovation District, we need to strengthen our enterprising approach to city building.  That is the subject of conversation at the May 28 meeting of Council.

Why was the joint presentation important?

The joint presentation is a sign of change – of doing business differently.  It is a sign of silos being broken down.  It is a sign of how effectively we have integrated our growth and economic development strategies to deliver the highest value to our community.
